SINTON, Texas - Five people were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 77 near Sinton, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Tuesday.
The accident was reported just before 3 a.m.
Surviving family members said the driver of the vehicle fell asleep causing the car to roll off the overpass and onto the roadway below right before it caught fire, officials said.
A total of nine people were traveling inside the 2003 Suburban, which was pulling a 6-foot box trailer, similar to a U-Haul. The occupants were believed to have been traveling from Georgia down to the Valley.
Other family members were traveling in a separate vehicle ahead of the Suburban. They said at some point they noticed the Suburban was no longer behind them, then circled back and found that the driver of the Suburban had driven off the road.
The survivors were taken to Bayshore ER in Portland, Texas, with non-life-threatening injuries.
