ESPN said Martin chose the Spurs over other playoff contenders like the Houston Rockets, the Dallas Mavericks, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

As a result of the acquisition the Spurs will have to release a player to make room on the roster.

Martin, 33, is an 11-year veteran averaging 10.6 points per game this season in 36 games for the Timberwolves before being released. He has averaged 17.6 points in 30.5 minutes per game for his career.

Martin is the second Minnesota player to sign with the Spurs following their buyout this season -- the first was point guard Andre Miller earlier this week.
