BGC Preview 2021: Southside Cardinals

QB Torres hoping to lead Cardinals on deep playoff run

Now one week away from the start of the 2021 high school football season, KSAT 12's Big Game Coverage visits Southside where quarterback Richard Torres is hoping to lead the Cardinals to a deep playoff run.

SAN ANTONIO – Southside quarterback Richard Torres made headlines this offseason by committing to the play for the University of Nebraska.

Now, he’s locked in and laser-focused on powering the Cardinals to a deep playoff run.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, Southside is predicted to win District 14-5A Division I. Torres is one of 11 starters returning from last year’s squad that finished 9-2 overall. That record is only slightly misleading, as the Cardinals had four games canceled due to COVID-19. Southside’s 2020 season ended in the second round of the playoffs, and that provides plenty of motivation as they prepare to begin the 2021 campaign.

The Cardinals open their season on Thursday, Aug. 26 at home against Brownsville Lopez. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
