Reinvented St. Gerard fends off Castle Hills Christian
On the 70th anniversary of its first homecoming, the Royals (1-1, 1-1) made the most of its chances to hold the lead for most of the last three quarters. St. Gerard held off a late push from Castle Hills Christian (0-3, 0-2) to win 51-42 in a TAPPS 6-man contest. “I’m so happy,” said St. Gerard junior back Roque Campos, who scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner on a 37-yard run with 1:36 remaining. Southside has season-opening win on the road
Southside struck twice early and kept host Rockport-Fulton mostly at bay in its season opener Friday for a 14-7 victory. “We had a bunch of (dropped passes) and had a couple of touchdowns called back,” Cardinals coach Ricky Lock said of the non-district game. On the Cardinals’ first possession, Torres threw the ball up for Tovar against double coverage and the junior came down with the 28-yard touchdown reception. Southside was stopped on downs at the Pirates’ 19-yard line on the next possession, but increased their lead to 14-0 the next time they had the ball. Coyotes play Cards here Tuesday
Uvalde High Schools Harvey Kinchlow Gym will be the site for District 28-5A basketball competition Tuesday night. The Uvalde Coyotes will close out the first half of their district season as they take on the Southside Cardinals. In UHSs Oscar Cruz Gym, the Uvalde and Southside freshman teams will tangle. Coach Shawn Dalberts Cardinals, 3-3 in district competition, had a district basketball open date Friday night. Four other players scored in double figures, including guard Senobio Ortiz, a 5-foot-5 senior, with 12 points, guard Anthony Mendoza, a 5-foot-11 junior, and guard Travis Robles, a 6-foot senior, each scored 11 points, while guard Steven Quintero, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored 10 points.uvaldeleadernews.com
