San Antonio submits bid to host 2026 FIFA World Cup games

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio officially announced its play to become a site for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Last week, Russ Bookbinder, president and CEO of San Antonio Sports, spoke about a potential proposal for the World Cup after it was announced that the World Collegiate Soccer Championship is headed to the Alamo City.

Bookbinder said events like the WCSC, the recent Gold Cup match featuring Mexico, various friendlies at the Alamodome and the push by San Antonio FC to become a Major League Soccer franchise have greatly built the resume of soccer in San Antonio in recent years, and the city was invited to make a bid.

According to a release, prospect cities were asked to send information about "transportation infrastructure, past experience hosting major sporting and cultural events, available accommodations, environmental protection initiatives, potential venues and more."

U.S. Soccer's bid committee intends on sending 20 to 25 venues in its final bid to FIFA. The group anticipates at least 12 cities could serve as official host cities.

Cities not selected could serve in other roles including hosting the international broadcast center, team base camps or other major events such as the preliminary or final draw.

U.S. Soccer announced the Alamodome as a potential site. The Alamodome seats 72,000 people.
