Highlights from Saturday afternoon’s UIL Regional Finals at Littleton Gym, as La Vernia battled Bellville in a five-set thriller with the Class 4A Regional title on the line, and Yoakum takes on Columbus looking to claim the Class 3A title.
In the third round of the UIL high school volleyball playoffs, La Vernia earned a hard-fought sweep of Davenport in which every set was decided by two points, while Harlan defeated Warren 3-1 to punch their tickets to this weekend’s Regional Tournament.

In their first-ever UIL season, the Boerne Champion boys water polo team battled all the way to the State Championship game at Josh Davis Natatorium on Saturday, first defeating Richmond Foster in the semifinals and then taking on Clute Brazoswood in the final.
The Brandeis girls high school water polo team became the first team from the San Antonio area to compete in the UIL State tournament Saturday, and their historic season ended in the semifinals with a 15-4 loss to Clute Brazoswood.
Even with competing in a bigger and more competitive district this season, the Antonian volleyball team is still dominant, posting a 35-11 overall record with a pristine 10-0 mark in district entering Wednesday, a result good enough to earn the district title outright with two regular season games left to play.

The Brandeis girls overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Brennan 23-14 in overtime, while the Boerne Champion boys knocked off Clark 16-13 to punch their tickets to state.
The Regional Quarterfinals of the inaugural UIL Water Polo playoffs provided some unforgettable drama, as the Brandeis girls erased a 4-goal deficit to defeat Alamo Heights 12-11, the Brennan girls fended off Health Careers 11-7, the Clark boys used a 4th-quarter surge to knock off Brandeis and the Boerne Champion boys raced past Alamo Heights.
The UIL’s inaugural high school water polo playoffs continued Saturday morning with the conclusion of the Area Round at Northside Aquatic Center. Ally Westendorf led the Brennan girls past Clark 12-7 to advance. In boys competition, Boerne Champion cruised past Warren and Alamo Heights defeated Brennan to set up a huge third-round matchup between the Chargers and Mules, while Clark knocked off Harlan in convincing fashion to punch their own tickets.
The boys hopped into the pool for the first UIL Bi-District Water Polo playoffs Tuesday night, and Clark put on a show in a 34-4 rout of Canyon. Alamo Heights followed that performance up with a convincing 19-5 victory over Marshall, as both the Cougars and Mules advanced to the Area round.
In high school volleyball, the race for the District 27-6A title could very well come down to Tuesday night’s results. In a showdown of 4-1 teams, New Braunfels defeated Steele to improve to 5-1 and take sole possession of the district lead, while Clemens stunned San Marcos with an impressive rally.
Tuesday morning, area high school teams hit the course at North East Sports Park for the District 28-6A cross country championships, where Johnson’s Tate Underwood took home the boys individual title and Brandeis’ Mikaela Garza claimed the girls title.
The UIL’s first water polo playoffs got underway Monday evening with the girls hopping in the pool first, and Northside teams took command from the jump. Brandeis rolled past Canyon, Clark rallied to beat Davenport, Health Careers knocked off Smithson Valley and Taft shutout Highlands in each schools’ inaugural playoff games.
