Alabama judge who used mock Asian accent in courtroom suspended and charged
A judge for the Mobile County Circuit Court in Alabama was suspended and charged with inappropriate demeanor and temperament based on multiple allegations, including a racially charged comment to a potential Asian American juror. The Judicial Inquiry Commission, the state agency that investigates complaints against judges, accused Judge James Patterson of violating judicial ethics with his inappropriate remarks and repeated profanity in court. The allegations refer to his remarks about Alabama Republican Gov. Kay Ivey.

Ride-hailing, delivery giants win fight against labor law
California voters passed Proposition 22 and delivered a stinging rebuke to state lawmakers and labor leaders who were fighting for better working conditions for a growing number of people who drive for ride-hailing and food delivery services. Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart and others sought to get out of those requirements, and after failing in court, succeeded in convincing voters to give them an exemption from most of the year-old lawโs provisions. The investment yielded a huge return for Uber and Lyft, whose combined market value climbed by $10 billion on Wednesday. Uber, Lyft and, DoorDash, Instacart and their supporters accounted for roughly $200 million that amount, underscoring how badly the companies wanted to preserve their business model. โItโs not really fair that Uber, Lyft etc.
James Patterson awards $500 grants to thousands of teachers
NEW YORK โ Thousands of schoolteachers will receive $500 grants from author James Patterson to help students build reading skills, especially as schools struggle to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic. The grant program is administered by Patterson and by Scholastic Book Clubs, which will provide teachers 500 club points to go with the $500 from Patterson. Out of more than 100,000 applicants, 5,000 teachers will receive grants and club points. Tuesdayโs announcement marks the sixth installment in the Patterson Partnership for building home and school libraries. Patterson, one of the worldโs best-selling novelists, has given more than $11 million to teachers, along with millions he has given to bookstores, libraries and literacy organizations.

The plot for The President's Daughter would seem uncomfortable for Clinton, who has a daughter, Chelsea. This novel is completely and fully fiction, says Washington, D.C. attorney Robert Barnett, who handles book deals for Clinton and Patterson. Clinton and Patterson were represented by Barnett and Deneen Howell of Williams & Connolly.
