The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first case of New World screwworm in a horse in Texas.

A company working to stop the spread of the New World screwworm has chosen Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio as the site for major new research, a project expected to bring 40 jobs and support efforts to protect Texas livestock, wildlife and pets.

Limited cattle imports from Mexico are set to resume through the Texas border after a yearlong shutdown aimed at stopping the spread of the New World Screwworm.

The majority of the sterile flies have been released along the Texas-Mexican border and in counties where there have been confirmed cases of NWS.

The New World Screwworm was detected Tuesday in a cow in northwest Medina County, according to the Texas Animal Health Commission. In response, Bandera County officials passed a local state disaster declaration during a Thursday morning meeting.

Until now, cattle were believed to be the main screwworm carriers. Investigations continue.
