Car impaled by guardrail; driver critically injured

Crash happened at Highway 151, Callaghan Road ramp

SAN ANTONIO – A man was critically injured Friday morning in a crash on the city's West Side.

Police said a 30-year-old man was speeding in the eastbound lanes of Highway 151 around 2:30 a.m. when he lost control of his car and hit a guardrail head-on at the Callaghan Road ramp.

The guardrail went through the engine compartment and into the car, pinning the driver inside, police said.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to extract the victim from the car, police said. He lost one of his legs and was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition, police said.

A passenger was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
