UVALDE, Texas – Several families camping at a park in Uvalde County Sunday morning were rescued from a rain-swollen Nueces River.
Helicopters plucked 27 people from Chalk Bluff Park near Highway 55 north of Uvalde, where the visitors found themselves trapped after the river rose nearly 12 feet in an hour and a half, officials said.
Some of the people rescued were taken to the Uvalde Civic Center where they met loved ones. Many of them arrived with nothing but what they were wearing.
Uvalde Assistant City Manager Joe Cardenas said that one family from Floresville narrowly escaped the raging flooding.
"Apparently they were told to go to higher ground, to climb up a tree. And I understand that's what they did, until help got out there and help pulled them out of that water. I also understand that they mentioned that their vehicle got washed away," Cardenas said.
Video from the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office showed a helicopter delivering life jackets to several people who were trapped in the bed of a pickup truck.
No injuries were reported.
