Homeowner turns away CPS Energy contractor without ID, company looking into situation

Company says woman did right thing

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio homeowner faced a tough decision Tuesday afternoon that ended with her turning away a contractor for CPS Energy who wanted access to her property on the city's Northeast Side.

"I looked at him and said ‘Where's your badge?’ and he said they don't offer us those. We ask for those every week in the meetings and they don't give them to us,” Lynda Browning said. “I stepped out and I looked at the truck in front of the house and it was just a white truck, (a) small white truck with no signage on it."

Browning said she refused him access to her property because he had no way of proving who he was.

KSAT contacted CPS Energy and it turns out the man was telling Browning the truth.

"We do work with our contractors to ensure that they have proper identification. We are investigating and working with this particular contractor," CPS Energy spokesman Yvonne Coronado said.

CPS praised Browning for questioning the man. They are also customers to be on the lookout this holiday season.

"In the past we've seen in uptick of fraudulent activities especially during the holidays. So we ask all our customers to just be aware of their surroundings, of who's at their door and what’s being asked of them," Coronado said.

Browning said she's not trying to get anyone in trouble. She's just protecting her family.

"Unfortunately, we live in a time that where we don't have the luxury anymore of taking people just at face value," Browning said.

CPS Energy said customers with questions or concerns can call them at 210-353-2222.
