More than 700 backpacks with supplies given to children of military families

Operation Homefront's Back-to-School Brigade gives out backpacks

SAN ANTONIO – Military City USA is gearing up for back to school in the Alamo City.

Operation Homefront's Back-to-School Brigade gave out more than 700 backpacks with supplies to children in military families. But it didn't end there.

Families were also introduced to organizations dedicated to helping military kids.

Universities on site were able to let families know about getting ready for college.

The San Antonio Library literacy van gave books to the children.

Many local businesses also stepped in to help and make sure military families felt welcomed.

"It's a way for the community to give back to the military folks who do have a need and especially this time of year when it's back to school," said Julie Coffey of the Military Child Education Coalition. "It's pretty pricey for families, so the community wants to step up and help with that."

Operation Homefront was in charge of collecting donations. Dollar Tree and SALC also teamed up to help Operation Homefront with donations of school supplies.
