SAN ANTONIO - Teachers are in high demand at the San Antonio Independent School District and other districts in the area.
With less than two weeks left until the start of the school year at SAISD, human resources still has about 35 teaching positions to fill, district spokeswoman Leslie Price said.

“The difference is we're starting earlier, so we're moving fast to get those filled,” she said.
With more than 3,000 teachers on the payroll, the district had about 400 vacancies to fill over the summer. Many teachers retired, while others simply quit the field.
Finding the replacements has become more difficult for districts.
“We've been recruiting across the state. We've seen a lot of interest in the city,” Price said.
The district is competing with several other local districts and schools across the nation.
“I think all the districts look that we have less and less educators coming out of the local Texas universities,” Price said.
Price said districts have reached out to schools around the nation to recruit new graduates.
SAISD, like many others, offers stipends to those who are bilingual or have a master’s degree and those who specialize in math and science fields.
Starting salary at SAISD is $51,500. School begins August 14 for the district.
