SAN ANTONIO - Every year, KSAT Community partners with the nonprofit Head for the Cure Foundation to raise money and awareness for brain cancer since the passing of former KSAT news director Jim Boyle in 2014.
Head for the Cure strives to raise awareness and funding to inspire hope for the community of brain cancer patients, their families, friends, caregivers and other supporters, while celebrating their courage, spirit and energy.
This is the fifth year the event will be held in San Antonio.
"I'd like to say that every family out there that is going to participate, every group that is going to participate, has a Jim Boyle in their lives. They've lost someone very important to them," said
KSAT 12 News executive director Mario Orellana, who was instrumental in bringing the event to the Alamo City.
Boyle's daughter, Erin Boyle-Dempsey, who has been very involved in promoting the event, said the 5K has grown in the past couple of years.
"You love it and you hate it at the same time, because I wish brain cancer was just gone. And it didn't have to grow. It's an underfunded cancer and there's not a lot of press, like some other cancers, and rightfully so.
I am here to bring it to more people's attention, because it really does need more money and more backing to fund. It's a terrible disease. It affects a lot of people."
