SAN ANTONIO ā A new River Walk-style development along San Pedro Creek is moving closer to reality.
"We've already picked the contractor, design and engineering work is done," Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said.
The goal is to completeĀ the first part of the $175 million project in time so Phase 1 will open as the city celebrates its tercentennial in 2018. Ā
"We hope to break ground this summer and start constructionĀ get the first phase done by May 18 2018 which is our 300th anniversary," said Wolff.
In a city known for its River Walk, county leaders say there is room for more development and that the San Pedro Creek Project will provide amenitiesĀ to locals and tourists not found on its sister development on the other side of downtown.
"Itās going to explain our history our culture,ā Wolff said. āThere will be writings and art on the wall that explain that. There will be live performances along the creek. We're already getting development along the creek, the new Frost Bank Tower."
Wolff said the area will have an almost museum-like appeal that will be built inĀ along the project's walls,Ā
"You can be down on the River WwalkĀ and you don't really know you're in SanĀ Antonio,ā Wolff said.Ā āOn this project along the way we've got several linear feet of wall about how SanĀ Antonio started."
The county judge also said there is a build it and they will come mentality, noting that there are plans for development from private companies. Ā
"I'm sure there will be some retail,ā he said. āI think even in the Frost building, itās going to be mixed development.Ā But itās going to have walkways.Ā Itās going to be different."
