Police search for clues about human remains

Neighbor said the bones appeared to be from a child

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police detectives and investigators with the Bexar County Medical Examiner's office continue to look for clues regarding a set of human remains discovered in a wooded area on the city's Southwest side.

According a police report, a child playing with a BB gun Sunday afternoon noticed a ribcage sticking out of the ground near 5 Palms Drive and Fairmeade.

Once officers arrived, they also found a human skull nearby, the report stated.

Maria Castillo, who called police to the scene, provided a few more details about the discovery.

Speaking in Spanish, she described the remains as appearing to be from a child, about 10 or 12 years old.

Castillo said she saw a beige bag with bones and a human skull lying nearby, and but did not notice any clothing on the body.

She said a friend was among the first to discover the remains and called her to take a look, thinking they might be from a dog or other animal. But Castillo said she quickly recognized they came from a person.

Detectives, along with investigators from the medical examiner's office, continued scouring the area throughout the day Monday.

They declined to release any additional information at the scene.
