Gas 'price war' continues in Floresville

Regular unleaded was $3.38 Wednesday at Wal Mart and HEB

An ongoing battle between two gas stations in Floresville shows no sign of easing up, much to the delight of drivers.

"Anywhere we can save a couple of bucks on a gallon of gas, everybody's going to want to do that," said Jack McCune, as he filled up his pickup at Walmart's Murphy Gas on Highway 181.

According to people in Floresville, the retail giant has been locked in a battle with HEB for the past few weeks, seemingly to determine who will be the low gas price leader.

Walmart recently opened its gas station, and many speculate the prices may be part of the celebration. HEB soon followed suit by lowering its prices.

On Wednesday, both stores had their regular unleaded pumps set at $3.38 per gallon, which was down three cents from the weekend, when signs advertised it at $3.41.

"I came out here early because I don't know how long it'll last," said Leslie Kurtz, as he filled up three gas cans and his compact car. "I think the other stations were hoping (the price war) would quit."

Independently owned Cox's is, somewhat, paying the price of the price war, according to store clerk Dana Wilson.

"A lot of our customers, I believe, have chosen to go there rather than fill up here," Wilson said. "We're trying to keep up but it is hurting. I'm sure it's hurting quite a few small businesses here."

As with many wars, it's unclear when the end to the battle over gas prices in Floresville will end.
