Parents upset, pry doors open to let kids off

Bus driver tells police he felt threatened by parent

A hectic situation on a Judson Independent School District bus had parents upset Thursday.

It began last week after a substitute bus driver said he was threatened by a woman who claimed she would beat him with a baseball bat. The woman was allegedly upset the driver wouldn't stop the bus where she wanted it to.

On April 10, the driver saw the same woman again, and became scared. He called Judson police, and per school district policy, locked the bus down.

"It is policy that it goes into a lockdown situation on the bus," said Aubrey Chancellor, Judson ISD spokesperson. "No one is to get off the bus, no one is to get onto the bus."

The driver can be seen on video from cameras inside the bus telling students the same thing.

But that didn't stop parents outside from getting upset. They yelled at the driver and their kids, and it caused a panic in the seats. Parents eventually pried the front door and back emergency exit door open, which is illegal, and the kids left. No charges will be filed against the parents.

"We understand it was a hectic situation, and we don't want to exacerbate the situation," said Chancellor.

But the district supports the driver, and said the kids were never in danger.

Several other school districts, including NISD and SAISD, said their policies are similar in the same situations. They all said student safety comes first, and they would have had their drivers do the same thing.
