The South San Independent School Board took a step towards renaming it's athletic center.
On Thursday, the board voted 3-2, with two abstentions, to form a three-member committee to consider a request to change the name of the Ron Durbon Athletic Center.

Durbon was fired last year amid a controversy involving his son, Gary, who served as the district's athletic director.
A South San alum started a Facebook campaign to rename the facility after Staff Sgt. Ray Rangel.
Rangel was a member of Air Force and a South San graduate who was killed in Iraq in 2005.
Rangel's father spoke to the board on Thursday and encouraged them to honor his son's sacrifice for his country.
"Coach Durbon was my coach and I respect him. But I also ask you all to respect and to please honor my son. This would be the ultimate thing for my son to be honored," Fred Rangel said.
Two people spoke against the name change including the granddaughter of Ron Durbon who is a South San student.
She urged the board to leave the name in place to honor Ron Durbon's 40 years of service to the district.
The board will now decide who will sit on the name change committee. A time line has not been set for them to make a decision.
