Police say he walked into the store, grabbed a Boost Mobile phone worth about $200 and began to cut the security tag off with a knife.
A loss prevention officer approached him and police say Jawad threatened the officer with the knife.
Investigators say the suspect's actions were similar to other Walmart robberies.
"We had been working, I don't want to say serial, but numerous cases where the same Modis Operandi was going on, cutting the the cell phone and then using a knife as loss prevention approaches them so we kind of had an idea of who it might be," said Sgt. Russ Van Gaffen with SAPD's Robbery Division.
Police say the surveillance video led them to identify the man.
Officers say Jawad was taken into custody Thurday while trying to sell stolen merchandise.
Jawad has been charged in Wednesday's robbery and investigators expect to file charges in the other robberies.
