Vigil held for Sonterra crash victim, Reagan grad Andres Cabrera Cordero

Cabrera, 19, killed in crash Wednesday morning on Sonterra at Sigma Road

SAN ANTONIO – A vigil was held Wednesday night for 19-year-old Andres Cabera Cordero, a Reagan High School grad who died in a crash earlier in the day on Sonterra Boulevard.

Close to 500 friends and family packed the Reagan High School football field to remember Cabrera's life.

Music was played, prayers were shared and several people spoke about Cabrera and the impact he had on their lives.

"He was a really loving person to all his friends. He wasn't afraid to tell his friends, 'I love you,' Marcela Cordero, Andres' mother said.

An accident report stated Cabera was apparently speeding around 6 a.m. when he lost control of his Ford Focus in the eastbound lanes of Sonterra and hit another car, bouncing off of it.

"We think maybe he over-steered, over-corrected, caused him to go into a skid and he hit the light pole and the fire hydrant," said Sgt. Tobe Whitley, with the San Antonio Police Department.

Cabrera's car came to rest on its side, with a huge dent in the driver's side showing the impression of the fire hydrant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family said he was a student and planned to attend Texas Tech or Texas A&M after finishing basic courses in San Antonio.
