SAN ANTONIO – The war on crime continues with police departments nationwide cracking down on violent crimes.
But the reality is that crime still strikes -- at times, turning ordinary people into innocent victims.
The San Antonio Police Department's preliminary crime stats indicate that violent crimes are down by more than 5 percent from 2011 and the property crime rate is down nearly 2 percent.
In addition, police are cracking down on drugs in the city, making a staggering 25 percent more arrests than during the same time last year.
But still, when it comes to safety, many women are taking matters into their own hands.
Helping them do that is former FBI Special Agent Tina Wilson, who has made it her mission to teach women about safety.
In opening "She Can Shoot," Wilson offers women a four-hour firearms course in personal gun safety.
"It takes away the intimidating factor of going into an all male-only or male-dominated environment," Wilson said.
"If I'm put in a situation where I need to use it, I don't want to think about anything but having to pull the trigger," said She Can Shoot student Shelly Good-Cook.
Novice shooter Julie Aromsky said she had never held a gun. After her course, she walked away with a prize.
While owning a gun may make you feel powerful, "More times than not, if you use common sense, you won't actually go ahead and pull that trigger," Wilson said.
But if they do need to shoot, now, they know how, Wilson said.
Five years ago, the National Rifle Association offered just 13 firearms training classes for women.
Today, there are more than 200 nationwide - catering just to the ladies.
