Driver could face charges in suspected drunken Braun Road crash

Heather Leighow, 29, blamed for crash that injured 9-month-old, 4 others

SAN ANTONIO – Heather Leighow, 29, could be charged with intoxication assault after a crash that injured five people, including a 9-month-old girl, at Loop 1604 and Braun Road.

San Antonio police said Leighow told them she had "only two drinks" prior to the 2:30 a.m. crash Thursday on the city's far Northwest side.

According to a police report, investigators determined that Leighow ran a red light at the intersection, causing another car to hit her 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

A passenger in her vehicle, Dawn Coombs, 29, suffered critical injuries and had to be flown to University Hospital.

The other car, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, was carrying a couple and their infant daughter.

A police report stated that Albert Cantu, 30; his wife, Vanessa Martinez Cantu, 23; and their 9-month-old daughter, Alina, all were transported to University Hospital by ambulance.

Police said Leighow also was taken to a hospital to have a mandatory blood drawn performed.

Depending on the outcome of that test, she could be charged with intoxication assault, police said.
