Mission Trail Baptist Hospital's labor and delivery department has been shut down, leaving the south side with just one hospital where women can give birth.
Mission Trail is less than two years old and was a welcome addition on the southeast side.
Until Tuesday, it offered labor and delivery services for women.
But now that service is gone, leaving Southwest General Hospital as the only south side hospital where women can give birth.
Marisa and Kevin Gay had planned to have their second child there.
"It was nice that they had something finally on the south side of town that was convenient for people who lived over here and now they're deciding to close it in such a short notice," said Marisa Gay.
Kevin Gay said the couple was informed just weeks ago were told they would have to move.
"At least they could have given us a heads up when we first got pregnant (and) started coming here," said Kevin Gay.
They'll now be delivering at Northeast Baptist because their doctor practices there.
"It's inconvenient because my family needs to travel now to the northeast side to go see our baby," said Marisa Gay.
"It just shows that they don't care (to) support this side of town," said Kevin Gay.
The Baptist Health System sent out this emailed statement:
"In response to the changing health care needs in the community, we will no longer offer labor and delivery services at Mission Trail Baptist Hospital as of May 1, 2013. These services will be moved to our nearby sister hospital – Baptist Medical Center in downtown San Antonio, as well as to our other hospitals throughout San Antonio (Northeast Baptist Hospital, St. Luke's Baptist Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital). The recent growth in business south of San Antonio has also brought an influx of patients to Mission Trail Baptist putting the hospital at capacity for our adult services on a routine basis. Labor and delivery services at our other four hospitals include all private rooms for new mothers and babies, access to level 3 NICU and experienced staff."
The Gays and others, however, hope another hospital will step in with labor and delivery services on the south side.
