The building is part of a $58 million bond referendum approved by voters in May 2010.

The three-story facility will connect to parts of the old building and add about 100,000-square feet of space.

"It's a brand new building and something that we started in 2010, with the bond in 2010 and it's a state of the art facility," said Rose Marie Martinez, President of the South San Board of Trustees. "We've got a culinary department. We've got bigger classrooms. We've got a planetarium type facility."

The new building can accommodate up to 3,000 students.
