Friends grieve for NW Side man killed in shooting

Sara Mary Clements, 24, charged in death of Alex Navarro, 22

Friends of a slain Northwest Side man are pouring out their feelings of a grief, while a woman accused of taking part in his killing remains locked up inside the Bexar County Jail.

Flowers, candles and notes with messages such as "Rest in peace" and "You'll always be my brother" decorate the landing outside the door of Alex Navarro's apartment.

San Antonio police said the 22-year-old was shot inside his second-floor unit at the Cordoba Apartment Homes on Callaghan Road shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

The wounded man then went to a neighbor's home for help, but died of his wounds.

The neighbor told police that before he died, Navarro said the name "Sara" over and over again.

San Antonio police spokesman Officer Roger Zuniga said late Thursday night, that Sara Mary Clements, 24, turned herself in, due to all the media coverage of the case.

"She called detectives from the East Side and they contacted her and brought her to the homicide office," he said.

An arrest warrant affidavit details what detectives said happened when they questioned Clements.

It stated that she gave investigators several different stories of what happened, including that she was present when Navarro was killed, but that her boyfriend shot him.

"We do know that she was at the scene at the time of the murder and also because of the victim's statements kind of helped corroborate that information," Zuniga said.

The affidavit also stated that Clements told detectives she would cooperate because they eventually would find a series of text messages that she and Navarro had exchanged before his death.

However, detectives said after they asked her to hand over her cellphone, Clements began deleting some of the messages, the affidavit stated.

Clements was officially arrested and charged with murder early Friday morning.

As she was led out of public safety headquarters in handcuffs, Clements hung her head and sniffled.
