Ooma dials up cheap home phone service

Internet phone service gets top ratings

How does a $4 monthly phone bill sound?

Ken Lipke pays less that that after ditching his traditional landline more than a year ago and switching to Ooma, a phone service that works via Internet.

He says it was a good call.

"I've saved, since I've used it, over $400," Lipke said.

You connect the Ooma box to your Internet service on one end and your regular phone on the other.  There is an initial one-time cost of $150 for the black box, then the savings begins.

Local and domestic long distance calls are free.  You do have to pay a few dollars in taxes.

International calls are extra, but the rates are very low. For example, calls to Mexico City are 3 cents a minute, according to the Ooma website.

There is a limit of 5,000 minutes of calls a month. And, if you  want to keep your home phone number, there is a one-time $40 fee.

Consumer Reports surveyed its readers about phone service, and they  gave Ooma top ratings.

"As for reliability and the quality of the calls, our survey found that Ooma's ratings were on par with traditional service from big companies like AT&T or Verizon," said Rosalind Tordesillas with Consumer Reports.
