Local vets react to 'shameful' VA allegations

San Antonio VA Clinic accused of manipulating appointments

Many veterans at VFW Post 76, the oldest in Texas, had heard about the allegations that coveted appointments had been manipulated to show no wait times at the VA North Central Federal Clinic in the 17000 block of Henderson Pass.

Reportedly, a clerk at that clinic is under whistleblower protection after describing what he and other clerks were instructed to do.

"The claims were investigated and could not be substantiated," said Nenette Madla, spokeswoman for the South Texas Veterans Health System.

However, Madla said scheduling staff have been told that no "wait list formats" should be used other than the VA's existing software.

The Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also has been involved.

In a statement, Catherine Gromek, OIG spokeswoman, only confirmed VA staff had been interviewed regarding "the misstatement of patient wait times."

Santiago Tello, a Vietnam veteran and captain of the Post 76 honor guard, said if true, the allegations are shameful.

"That's the only word I can come up with for our country to do what they're doing," Tello said.

He said he especially worries about younger veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tello said they shouldn't have to go through what older veterans did returning from Vietnam and, to some degree, Korea.

He said back then, the VA's perceived policy was, "Delay, deny and hope they die."

"To some degree, it still applies," Tello said.

Albert Mireles, the Post 76 commander who earned the Purple Heart in Vietnam, said many of his members also are upset by other allegations about secret waiting lists and deadly wait times at a VA clinic in Arizona.

Mireles said, "You're hurting one day. You don't want to wait a whole month to be seen by a doctor."

He said as it is, members are waiting up to three years to have their VA claims adjudicated.
