Vigil held for victims of car wash shooting

Royal Willrich, 30, and Vontay Price, 22, killed Monday on East Side

SAN ANTONIO – Less than a week after two men were shot and killed at an East Side car wash, the community came together to remember them.

Royal Willrich, 30, and Vontay Price, 22, were shot Monday night at a car wash on the corner of North New Braunfels Avenue and Gibbs Street.

More than 100 people gathered at Lockwood Park Saturday night for a candlelight vigil.

Stand Up S.A., a Metro Health violence prevention program, helped organize the gathering.

Vontay Price's grandmother, Pinkie Price, broke down in tears Saturday night.

"I'm going to miss my baby," she said. "And whoever did this to my baby, I feel sorry for you. Let the police get you and God judge you."

Stand Up S.A. said they helped put together the vigil to honor the victims, and to try and stop the violence on the streets.

"We need to come together as a community to show support," said Leslie Grubbs, with Urban Connection San Antonio. "To not just let things pass and let things happen without things coming together, to show some camaraderie and fellowship, to come together in unison about one thing -- that we need to stop the violence."

Stand Up S.A. has been working since September to engage with the community to try and resolve the issues with crime.

"It's not always the answer, sending the police in, but what we can do is go in and treat it like it's a disease," said Grubbs. "Go in and say, 'There's a problem.' And go in and build relationships so we can diffuse problems."

Police are still trying to figure out who fired the fatal shots and why.
