Rock climbers plunge to deaths on far North Side

SAPD: Alcohol found at scene of apparent rock-climbing accident near Shavano Ranch, Rogers Ranch

SAN ANTONIO – Two men plunged to their deaths late Monday night in an apparent rock-climbing accident in far north San Antonio.

The bodies of the men were located at the base of Medicine Wall outside Loop 1604 between Shavano Ranch and Rogers Ranch.

San Antonio police responded to a welfare check around 10:30 p.m.

"There was a person that called 911 last night concerned about two friends that had gone rock climbing and hadn't heard from those friends in over two hours," said Christian Bove, public information officer for the San Antonio Fire Department.

First responders followed the friend through rough terrain to the steep cliff and around midnight found the bodies.

"They did fall. Their bodies suffered severe trauma, and both people were pronounced dead at the scene," Bove said. "It looks as though these people were trying to rappel down when they fell. It wasn't enough, it wasn't sufficient gear that they had to be doing the type of climbing that they were attempting."

San Antonio firefighters used ATV's to get the bodies out of the area.

One man was believed to have been in his 20s and the other in his 30s. Their names have not been released.

Police said they found alcoholic beverages at the scene.

Medicine Wall is an 80- to 100-foot cliff that is a popular location for rock climbers.
