SAPD: Man set car fire linked to woman's slaying

Carmen Herrera, 33, found shot several times in head last month

SAN ANTONIO – A man admitted to setting a car on fire that has been linked to the murder of a West Side woman.

Carmen Herrera, 33, was found shot several times in the head last month at an apartment complex on North San Joaquin near Culebra Road and General McMullen.

According to an arrest affidavit, investigators were questioning Herrera's then-boyfriend, Willie Ybarra, 32, about her death when he admitted to setting Herrera's mother's black four-door Hyundai Sonata on fire. 

Police said that during a January interview with investigators, Ybarra said "I burned the car because it was reported stolen."

Authorities added: "I burned the car because I was scared and my fingerprints were all over it."

The following day, officers found the car burning at the corner of Mascota Street and Alicia Avenue.

Ybarra is in custody without bond for a parole violation.

He is also being held on arson charges. He is has not been charged with Herrera's murder.
