SAPD holds festival, car show to honor fallen officers

SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of people attended the San Antonio Police Department's academy grounds Saturday afternoon for the Fourth Annual Memorial Festival and Open Car Show.

Festival organizers said the event is a great way to show families of fallen officers that they're not forgotten.

"We put this event together because we want to create a fun-filled atmosphere for the families of the survivors," said Officer Yvonne Padilla. "At the same time, we use the proceeds from this event for those families when they travel to Washington and the name of their loved one is placed on the Memorial Wall."

The festival featured activities for the kids, an open car show with more than 150 entries and plenty of food.

"I really like the way they have the fire trucks set up," San Antonio resident Jennifer Chavez said. "The kids can go and see how they work inside, very kid-friendly."

Sergio Chavez said knowing that the proceeds benefit the families of the department's fallen officers is what brought him to the event.

"To come support the local police department, for the community," Chavez said.
