Volunteers cover River Walk in yellow ribbons for U.S. military

Yellow Ribbon Project honors all branches of active duty, veterans

SAN ANTONIO – The River Walk is lit up yellow in honor of our U.S. military thanks to the Yellow Ribbon Project.

The boats that roll down the San Antonio River got an early start Saturday morning, toting volunteers hanging yellow ribbons to honor past and present military members.

Boy Scout Nathan Young, 11, joined 19 other scouts and 30 adult volunteers who together tied up 400 yellow ribbons.

"It means a lot to me because almost everybody in my family has been military. In fact my dad is at the hospital right now down at (Brooke Army Medical Center). Plus, my mom was special intelligence," Nathan said.

The morning of ribbon-placing was in preparation for America's Armed Force Parade May 16. Fifteen-thousand people will watch the parade among the yellow ribbons.

Boy Scout Logan Sebastian, 11, said he can't wait for active duty military and veterans to see the ribbons he hung.

"It's going to mean a lot because I have family that's in the military, some haven't came back," Logan said.

Each ribbon tied Saturday cost $5 and was paid for by a community member. There is still time to support the parade and buy a ribbon. Click here for more information.
