SAN ANTONIO – Jorge Vargas, 30, was shot and killed June 24 and the person who killed him is still on the loose.
For his family, fear has been added to sorrow. Sunday at Vargas' rosary, his family opened up about their loss and their mounting concerns.
"He was a loving father. He loved his kids," said Vargas' mother Velma Almendarez.
Vargas leaves behind three children, ages 10, 8 and 7.
"He had just left my house an hour before it happened," Almendarez said through tears.
Police said Vargas was standing outside his car in a residential area near Neal Elementary School on the North Side. After being wounded, Vargas told police a man in a dark-colored car pulled up, shot him and drove off. The Bexar County medical examiner has confirmed that he died the next day at University Hospital.
"He wasn't even there five to 10 minutes before it happened. So I don't know, somebody must have set him up or something," Almendarez said.
Family members said they didn't think he had any enemies, and if he did, they have no idea who they may be. The person who shot him still has not been found. The thought ignites fear in the whole family.
"I want the person who did this to him behind bars before he hurts anybody else and our family, or anybody else out there," Almendarez said.
Vargas's sister Viviana Hernandez pleaded with the public for help.
"Somebody knows what happened. Somebody out there knows. Or somebody has him hiding and let him out. They need to come forward. It's just not fair that this guy's still out there living life and maybe having a good old time and we're here having to bury our loved one," Hernandez said.
At the rosary, family members tried to put the suspect in the back of their minds and focus on saying goodbye.
