Son on trial for murder in father's death

Jury sees video of high-speed chase that led to arrest

SAN ANTONIO – After allegedly shooting his father Samuel Dean, 52, to death during an argument authorities say Jason Turner, 33, sped off in his truck during the early-morning hours of Aug. 30, 2014.

San Antonio police officer Steven Martinez testified he spotted Turner and tried to pull him over.

“Very high-speed. Very erratic,” Martinez testified before prosecutors showed the jury dash cam video of a chase that would follow.

“Obviously he was disregarding a traffic stop,” he said.

Several other SAPD units joined the chase as Turner sped through the city’s Southwest side.

“We kept a visual on it until he got onto the highway and at a certain pint he just pulled away,” Martinez testified. “His vehicle was just too fast for our patrol cars to keep up.”

As the chase continued Turner eventually lost control of the truck.

“When he exited (FM) 1516 he hit a guardrail and the truck rolls,” he said. “Actually it rolled up an embankment.”

Martinez said that Turner jumped from the truck and fled on foot to a nearby business where he got into a car that had the keys in the ignition.

He sped off, Martinez said, and as he fled tried to run down several officers who had been chasing him on foot. The officers fired three shots but did not hit Turner.

Other officers in patrol cars chased Turner into a neighborhood where he crashed the car into a house and was arrested.

Testimony is expected to continue on Friday in Judge Ray Olivarri’s 399th District Court.
