Sheriff says gunman was in stolen car

WILSON COUNTY, Texas – A shootout with Wilson County deputies Saturday left a man in critical condition.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said the shooting happened around 9 a.m. after deputies followed the man to Highway 181 and Loop 1604.

Tackitt said the suspect had stolen a car and fired shots at a house on a Wilson County road and began driving around Highway 181.

Tackitt said deputies began pursuing the man until he stopped, got out of the car and began firing at the deputies.

The deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, Tackitt said.

The man was airlifted to University Hospital in critical condition.
