WEBB COUNTY, Texas – One person died and 10 others were injured Sunday evening north of Laredo in a chase that ended in a crash.
The pursuit began around 5:30 p.m. when U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted a suspicious truck driving north on an Interstate 35 access road 37 miles north of Laredo. Agents tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped off, KGNS TV reports.
Officers tried to use a tire deflation device to end the chase but the driver lost control of the truck while trying to avoid the device.
One person died at the scene. Ten others were taken to hospitals in Laredo, San Antonio and Dilley. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
The body of the person who died was taken to the Webb County Medical Examiner's Office.
Border Patrol agents are investigating why the driver did not stop.
Border Patrol provided the following statement on Sunday's crash:
"At approximately 5:35p.m., Laredo North Border Patrol agents observed a suspicious vehicle driving northbound on the west access road on Interstate Highway 35. Border Patrol agents attempted to make a vehicle stop and the driver of the vehicle failed to yield to the emergency lights. Border Patrol agents attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop through the use of a controlled tire deflation device but as the subject attempted to avoid the device, the driver lost control of the vehicle subsequently causing it to roll over. The accident is currently under investigation."
