SAN ANTONIO – A man who police said tried to shoplift from a Walmart Tuesday morning was hit and killed as he ran across Loop 410 South.
The accident was reported around 8 a.m. along Loop 410 near Ray Ellison Drive.
"The victim allegedly stole some property from Walmart and was being chased by their security personnel," SAPD Officer Doug Greene said. "When the individual attempted to cross Loop 410, that's when he was struck by a vehicle."
Greene said the driver initially left the scene of the accident, but returned a short time later and was cooperated with investigators.
"It was a little about panicking and so forth," Greene said. "But again, he's being very cooperative with us. Shaken up, obviously, by what happened. But during the outcome of the investigation questioning by detectives, we'll find out more about his reasoning on why he left."
The driver, a man in his 30s, was being questioned by detectives Tuesday morning. It's unclear whether the man will face charges.
Traffic in the southbound lanes of 410 reopened around 10 a.m.
The victim was around 40 years old, Greene said.
