Man shot, killed by police no stranger to SAPD

Jose Casares threatened to kill 15-year-old, Chief McManus says

SAN ANTONIO – A man who was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer Monday morning was no stranger to law enforcement, police Chief William McManus said.

Police responded to a home around 8 a.m. in the 1800 block of Plaza Del Sol for a call about a man who threatened to shoot and kill a 15-year-old.

When officers arrived, they started to enter the home through an open door, but backed out when they heard gunfire inside the home, McManus said.

Minutes later, Casares walked out of the house armed with a handgun, McManus said.

Officers told Casares to drop the weapon, but he refused, McManus said. When Casares raised the gun, an officer shot and killed him, McManus said.

About a month ago, police were called to the home.

"Speaking with neighbors, I'm told he's been a problem," McManus said. "We were here last month. We arrested him for family violence."

Although some neighbors told police that Casares had been a problem, Rosalinda Garcia, who lives down the street, said she didn't know there was trouble in the home.

Garcia said she would see the children who lived in the home walk past her house on their way home from school.

"It's very sad," Garcia said. "I feel sorry for those kids, and for the wife, too. This has never happened here. Never."

Along with the 15-year-old, there was a woman and a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old in the home.

Police said they were not hurt.

"My mom lives across the street," Garcia said. "I was raised there, and we never had this problem. My mom is always out there. It's always quiet back here. It's just unbelievable what happened this morning."
