Nearly 30 San Antonio Fire Department units were dispatched to an apartment complex in the Medical Center on Saturday.

A black plume of smoke could be seen rising from the Broadstone on Medical Apartment Homes at 4900 Medical Drive. SAFD spokesperson Woody Woodward said the fire started in a first-floor bathroom around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

"One of the difficult situations in an apartment fire like this is the fire gets behind the wall and flames aren't always visible," Woodward said.

The fire spread up to the third floor and authorities called for a second alarm as a precaution. Woodward said the fire doesn't appear suspicious and was sparked by electrical issues in the bathroom.

Firefighters estimate 12 units were affected. They are currently trying to establish how many people live in the units and are working with the apartment's staff to get residents situated in the meantime.
