Boy, 6, killed in deputy-involved shooting identified
Victim identified as Kameron Prescott, female suspect also killed in shooting
SCHERTZ, Texas – The name of a 6-year-old boy who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting Thursday has been released.
The boy was identified Friday as Kameron Prescott, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Kameron attended Weiderstein Elementary in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District, said school district spokesman Ed Suarez.
Suarez said he expects extra counselors will be on hand when classes resume in early January.
Kameron was killed following a lengthy manhunt for a woman in her 30s who was also killed in the shooting at the Pecan Grove Mobile Home Park off FM 78 in Schertz, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
The woman, a known felon, was believed to have been armed, but deputies didn't find a weapon, Salazar said.
The sheriff said the woman led deputies on a foot chase for about a mile through the woods. Salazar said she pointed a gun at deputies.
“At one point, the suspect actually crossed a creek that was there. Two of the K-9 deputies also crossed that creek, also on foot with their dogs,” Salazar said.
The woman ended up cornered near a mobile home she was trying to enter, Salazar said. Deputies said they felt threatened by the woman and opened fire, striking her several times, Salazar said.
Kameron was inside a trailer when was fatally shot in the abdomen.
"I was on the bus coming home from school, and I was freaking out because we all heard the gunshots," said Galaxy Scott, who knew Kameron.
“He was just that little kid. Mostly rode around on his bike when his cousin wasn't around. He was really sweet,” said Callie Lawrence, a neighbor.
The Sheriff’s Office said the woman wouldn’t surrender after it was discovered she was trying to break into homes.
Investigators on Friday were continuing to look for the gun the woman may have been carrying. Authorities said if anyone finds it, they’re asked not to touch it, stay near it and call the Sheriff’s Office.
