Authorities identify woman run over 'number of times' in school parking lot

John Bogard, 89, charged with murder

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE: The medical examiner's office identified the woman killed as 54-year-old Dora Vela.

The San Antonio Police Department identified the man accused of killing the woman with his vehicle as 89-year-old John Bogard. Authorities say he's charged with murder.

A woman is dead after a man in his 80s ran her over "a number of times" following an altercation in an elementary school parking lot, police say.

Police were called to the parking lot of Walzem Elementary School Saturday afternoon for a report of shots fired.

Police said the driver of the car allows homeless people to stay at a property in the 4600 block of Walzem Road, near the elementary school, and got into an argument with the woman at the property.

As the woman was leaving the property, the man got into his Ford Focus and ran her over several times, authorities said. A witness with a concealed handgun license began firing at the driver and his car to get him to stop and blew out one of the man's tires.

Jose Sandoval, who lives behind the property, spoke to the woman just minutes before he witnessed her death.

"He was chasing her with his car, and he struck her. She flew over the car and landed by the back tire. He put the car in reverse and ran her over," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said he saw the man calmly getting out of his vehicle to see the woman's body stuck under the car before the man drove off.

"My wife screamed, 'She's still alive,' because you could see her breathing,'" Sandoval said.

Police later found the car at the suspect's home, just minutes away from Windcrest.

"I never would have thought what would have happened. Today would be the ending result. They would always argue for the smallest thing," said Hector Lopez, a neighbor.

Neighbors often heard arguments between the property owner and the homeless people at the home.
