Dilley police shoot, kill shotgun-wielding man

Police-involved shooting reported at Dilley Park

DILLEY, Texas – A man who was firing off a shotgun at a public park in Dilley was shot and killed by police, officials said.

Police were called to Dilley Park just after midnight Friday for a call of shots fired.

When officers arrived at the park, they found a man in his 20s firing a shotgun, officials said.

The gunman and the officers got into a confrontation, and that's when the man was shot and killed, officials said.

"They really fired in self-defense or at least followed protocol in that type of situation," said Rudy Alvarez, city administrator.

Alvarez said this may be the town's first-ever officer-involved shooting.

Officials have not released the name of the man who was shot or the officer who shot him.

Alvarez said the officer who fired and another responding officer will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

The Texas Rangers are investigating.
