Gas prices relatively low during Labor Day weekend

DPS urges drivers to think about safety

SAN ANTONIO – For travelers who will be on the road for this year's Labor Day weekend, there is some good news coming their way regarding gas prices.

According to AAA, gas prices are relatively low this holiday weekend.

In San Antonio, the average is $2.52 a gallon, but people who are heading to the coast can expect a little higher price at $2.58 in Corpus Christi and $2.61 in Galveston.

People who are traveling to the New Braunfels area to take advantage of popular rivers and lakes, can expect the lowest gas prices at an average of $2.48.

Another factor drivers have to worry about this weekend, as always, is safety.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the Labor Day weekend averages about 40 deaths, which DPS says are typically caused by car accidents.

Luis Moreno, who is traveling from Dallas to Mexico this weekend, said he and his family started their trip early Friday morning to avoid the traffic and stay safe.

"We are going there because one of my cousins is getting married, so that’s one of the reasons, otherwise we’d probably be in Dallas still," Moreno said.

Moreno said during his drive from Dallas, he already saw an accident this morning that he believes was fatal.

AAA recommends travelers take their time on the roads and take frequent stops to avoid fatigue.
