A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning in downtown San Antonio.
The man was threatening to jump off the overpass at Interstate 37 and Cesar Chavez Boulevard, but four San Antonio Police Department negotiators were able to talk him down off the ledge, police Chief William McManus said.
A SAPD helicopter pilot identified what appeared to be a gun in the man's waistband and informed officers on the ground, McManus said.
When the man reached for the weapon, four officers opened fire, McManus said.
"Officers (believed) it to be a gun, (but) it was a knife. It turned out to be a knife with a ... gun-grip handle. And the officers, believing that to be a weapon, four officers fired. They hit him in the upper torso, and I think once in the upper leg," McManus said.
The man was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he died.
The four officers will be put on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.
