Air Force trainer plane crashes near Rolling Oaks Mall

Student pilot, instructor sustain minor injuries

SAN ANTONIO – An Air Force trainer plane from JBSA-Randolph crashed Tuesday afternoon near Rolling Oaks Mall.

The Wing T-6A Texan II crashed at the Circle Dot Ranch around 4 p.m., but not before the crew ejected safely.

The Student pilot and instructor sustained minor injuries and were taken to the base medical clinic for evaluation, a news release said.

Brandi Williams, resident caretaker at the San Antonio Polo Club, said she saw the two men eject from the plane prior to hearing a loud explosion.

Williams said the plane didn't burst into flames and seemed to "come down easy."

She said the pilot got a phone call and answered nonchalantly after the crash.

According to Military.com, the T-6A Texan II is an aircraft for student and instructor pilots.

The T-6A Texan II was indefinitely grounded earlier this year due to concerns about hypoxia and "unexplained physiological events," the military publication reported.

Use of that plane model was later reinstated.

Williams said that investigators arrived at the scene as the men began to explain what caused the plane to crash, but wasn't certain what caused the plane to crash.

Flying training at the 12th Flying Training Wing at Randolph has been suspended until further notice, officials said.
