Bexar deputy proposes to girlfriend after graduation

Deputy Joaquin Galvan gets on knee, asks girlfriend to marry him

SAN ANTONIO – First he graduated, then he put a ring on it.

It was an extra-special ceremony Wednesday for a group of Bexar County deputies. The class of 21 deputies graduated at Texas A&M Brooks City-Base.

After they all took their oaths to serve, Deputy Joaquin Galvan got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend to marry him, and she said yes. The surprise left her speechless, but thinking one thing.

"The opportunity was there. I mean, she stood by my side the whole time through the whole part of my early career," Galvan said. "It just felt like the right time, especially with all my new brothers and sisters and family and friends being here."

The couple met in Pearsall while she was working at a school and he was a police officer for the school.

It was one of several remarkable things about Wednesday's graduation, including a deputy who thought she might never see the ceremony after a life-altering injury.
