Child found safe, man arrested in car theft kidnapping, authorities say

Victor Miguel Torres, 31, has been taken into custody

SAN ANTONIO – A man has been arrested and charged in the theft of a motor vehicle which had a three-year-old child asleep in the backseat, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

Victor Miguel Torres, 31, has been charged with the possession of the stolen vehicle. A kidnapping charge is also pending.

Late Monday evening an AMBER Alert was issued by the San Antonio Police Department after the car was taken from the city's West Side with Josue Gonzalez, 3, in the backseat.

The child's mother said she had left the child in the car with it running while she went to pick up her boyfriend.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said both the child and car were eventually found by Fayette County Law Enforcement after a citizen reported the suspect in an eastbound rest area on Interstate 10 just west of Flatonia.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said Torres was taken into custody and that Gonzalez was checked by EMS for precautionary reasons.

Gonzalez was then returned to his family members following the ordeal. He was not hurt.
