Community marches to remember domestic violence victim

Angie Garcia-Ellison, 42, fatally shot by husband

SAN ANTONIO – Marchers made their way from San Anto Cultural Arts to a peace and remembrance mural to add another name of a victim of domestic violence to a growing wall.

On Sept. 22, 42-year-old Angie Garcia-Ellison was fatally shot by her husband, who then killed himself at their Northwest Side home.

“It's really great to be surrounded by love and a sense of community and people who have gone through the same thing,” said Joshua Garcia, Garcia-Ellison’s eldest nephew. “We find a sense of solace and comfort when we're people who have gone through the same issue.”

“We're really proud to be able to have everyone be part of such a memorable experience as well as a healing experience for the families,” said Steven Maldonado, community outreach coordinator for San Anto Cultural Arts, who helped organize the march along with the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative.

The march ended at the mural at San Patricio and Trinity streets, where the family added Garcia-Ellison’s name to the painting.

“One in three men and one in four women go through intimate partner violence,” Garcia said. “When you look at this wall, you see victims who have been taken too soon because of violence. If we can get one person to realize that domestic violence can lead to murder, that's what we're here for.”
