ROCKPORT, Texas - Gov. Greg Abbott and country western great George Strait paid a visit to Rockport on Thursday to meet with victims affected by Hurricane Harvey.
The pair spoke with residents about their needs as they continue the rebuilding process.
Abbott also reaffirmed his commitment to doing everything possible to get Rockport and its surrounding areas all necessary resources to assist in the recovery efforts.
"As I have traveled across Texas in the aftermath of this storm I have been amazed by the resiliency of Texas communities as they come together to rebuild," he said. "It has been so inspiring to see neighbors helping neighbors through this recovery process, and I thank George Strait for all his amazing work in helping our fellow Texans. I want to assure the people of Rockport, and all those in the affected areas, that we will be with them every step of the way throughout this process."
Strait thanked Abbott for inviting him and told residents that the governor has great plans to rebuild the area.
The man called "The King of Country" said he was surprised by the extent of the damage when he visited the area last week.
"I knew it was bad, but when I got here I realized just how bad it was. It made me sad," he said.
Strait said he and wife like the area and want to see it bounce back.
"We like just the way it was, and we want to get it back there. I want to go fishing," he said.
Strait fans were very happy to see him in their community.
"We need his support and he is a homeboy, he is Rockport strong. Je is a pirate, and he's coming home to help us. And, he's so famous," said Capt. Billie Kocian, who lost his home in the hurricane. "People are going listen to him before they listen to me. I'm just a fishing guide."
"I'm a big fan and ... hopefully he will help us and help us get help," Yoli Perez said.
Hurricane Harvey came ashore Aug. 25 and was a Category 4 storm when it leveled the schools, homes and businesses in Aransas County. At least one person was confirmed dead and another 12 were injured by the storm.
